- European Cascade Calls
European Cascade Calls, also known as Financial Support for Third Parties (FSTP), are funding mechanisms introduced by the European Commission to foster innovation and research across Europe. This scheme allows projects funded under larger EU programs (like Horizon 2020 or Horizon Europe) to distribute financial support to smaller entities, such as startups, SMEs, and other third parties, through open calls.
How Cascade Calls Work
- Primary Grant: The European Commission awards a large grant to a consortium of organizations (usually universities, research centers, or large companies) working on a specific project.
- Sub-Grants: The consortium then issues open calls for proposals, inviting smaller entities to apply for funding to contribute to specific tasks or innovations within the larger project.
- Application and Selection: Interested third parties submit their proposals. These are evaluated based on criteria set by the consortium, such as innovation potential, technical feasibility, and impact.
- Funding and Implementation: Selected third parties receive financial support (typically ranging from €20,000 to €200,000) to carry out their proposed activities. They become part of the larger project, contributing their expertise and innovations.
Benefits of Cascade Calls
- Accessibility: Cascade Calls lower the entry barrier for smaller entities to access EU funding.
- Flexibility: They offer flexibility in terms of the types of projects and activities funded.
- Innovation: By involving diverse and smaller players, these calls stimulate innovation and ensure a wider reach of EU research initiatives.
