NEW ACTION PLAN FOR THE CIRCULAR ECONOMY

On 11 March, the European Commission published the new Action Plan for the Circular Economy, which presents new initiatives throughout the life cycle of products in order to modernise and transform our economy, while protecting the environment.

Along the same lines, the European Union Biodiversity Strategy for 2030 was presented on 20 May, which consists of a comprehensive, systemic, ambitious and long-term plan to protect nature and reverse the degradation of ecosystems.

Principal measures of the action plan for the circular economy

Sustainable products will be the norm in the European Union

The Commission will propose legislation on Sustainable Product Policy so that products placed on the EU market are designed to last longer, are easier to re-use, repair and recycle, and incorporate recycled material as far as possible.

Ensuring less waste

Avoiding waste altogether and transforming it into high-quality secondary resources that benefit from a well-functioning secondary raw materials market.

Consumers will be more involved

They will have access to reliable information on issues such as reparability and durability of products to help them make environmentally sustainable decisions.

Focus on the sectors that use the most resources and where the potential for circularity is high.
