Europe seeks to continue leading in science and technology

On October 25, the European Innovation Council (EIC) unveiled the EIC Tech Report 2023 with the aim of analyzing projects funded by the European Innovation Council (EIC).

and assess technology trends in various sectors. The EIC’s mission is to lead in science and technology, identifying innovative developments in the scientific community. Using a proactive approach, the EIC starts with a thorough analysis of its current project portfolio to ensure it is on the right track.

The report is structured in two chapters:

Chapter 1 – Current EIC Portfolio

This chapter highlights disruptive technologies and innovations submitted to the EIC under

Horizon Europe

. It focuses on early research projects funded after rigorous evaluations and briefly discusses high quality proposals not yet funded.

The selection process is based on the novelty of the projects, without ranking by potential impact or comparison with global trends. The methodology includes text analysis and innovation indicator detection tools, expert-based exploration and review of third-party reports. The portfolio is classified into three areas: Digital, Industry and Space; Clean Technologies and Healthcare.

Chapter 2 – The Role of EIC Program Managers

This chapter explores key areas overseen by EIC program managers critical to positioning the European Union at the forefront of innovation in disruptive technologies. These experts identify emerging trends and provide guidance for future EIC actions. They highlight technologies of interest and contextualize them in broader opportunities and developments. Their contributions establish connections between previously identified issues and specific projects in their portfolios.

This analysis will guide future EIC bets, aligning internal data with global trends. The aim is to broaden the scope of the report and discover emerging areas that will influence future European and national priorities. Scientific and technological innovations could address key societal challenges, including the Green and Digital transitions.

Europe, with the backing of more than €10 billion from the EIC, is positioned to lead in disruptive technologies.
